Picture the scene: you’ve walked into a bridal boutique, you’ve tried on a dress and it’s so nearly “the one.” If only it had longer sleeves…

Do you give up on the gown completely, or is there something you can do about it?! Well, here at Bys Vyken Bridal, we’re proud to work with four fabulous design houses, all of whom offer varying levels of wedding dress customisation. That means that you can make your dress yours, in whatever way you need. In this month’s blog, we thought we’d take a closer look at each of our designers and the customisation they offer…

Marylise

Every Marylise dress is made to order, so from the moment you say “I do” to your dream wedding gown, it’s made just for you, to your dress size. Whilst Marylise always strives to remain true to their signature designs, they do offer each bride the chance to make subtle changes, if needed. For example, a strapless dress can be given sleeves, a split in the skirt can be removed (or added, if one doesn’t already exist!) and the neckline of the dress can be raised, or the shape changed, according to preference.

As with all of the fabulous designers we stock, Marylise also offer several dresses with optional extras to make customisation even easier, such as detachable sleeves or stunning accessories, such as the beautiful tulle bow seen on Indio!

Serene by Madi Lane

Serene wedding gowns are designed to ensure that every bride’s vision for her dream dress is possible. The modification begins right at the fitting, with custom sizing and Serene’s exclusive bust cups – made to fit perfectly and comfortably – meaning many brides are able to ditch their bras for their big day!

Beyond ensuring that their gowns are comfortable for every body shape, Serene go further with their wedding dress customisation options, giving brides the chance to add or remove sleeves and splits, modify the length of the skirt, change the material and simplify the overall look of the gown by removing appliqué details to the skirt. Brides can also pick from a soft jersey or charmeuse fabric lining for their wedding dress, both of which are available in a variety of shades to help match different skin tones.

Serene also offer some of their dresses in different colour options, such as the stunning Max, which can be ordered in ivory/mocha or ivory alone.

Rembo Atelier

Passion and craftmanship flow through every Rembo wedding dress! Again, all Rembo dresses are produced on demand, so they’re as sustainable as they are stunning. The gown of your dreams begins with a custom fitting and then you can start making subtle changes to make that dress unique! Whether it’s changing the shape or height of a neckline, removing a split in the skirt, or adding sleeves to a strapless dress, just tell us how we can make you feel more comfortable on your big day and we’ll speak to the designers about making it happen.

Rembo also feature many ways to easily customise their dresses without making changes to the original, such as producing detachable sleeves or, in the case of the elegant Promesse, even a detachable scarf!

Shikoba Bride

Shikoba are all about celebrating the uniqueness of every bride! For that reason, they offer customisation as a key part of their designs. They’ll mix and match fabrics and sleeves across dress designs, giving you a chance to really put your stamp on your look! Shikoba also pride themselves on bespoke fabric choices – for example, if you have your heart set on a Shikoba gown, but it simply has to be teal, they’ll do all they can to source the perfect colour and fabric to create you that teal wedding dress of your dreams.

No train? No problem! Shikoba will alter a dress’s train length according to preference, as well as the back and neckline of the gown.

If you’re looking for a less costly way to customise your wedding look, Shikoba also offer a variety of slips, toppers and separate skirts, all of which can be mixed and matched to create a look that is unmistakably you! If you’re looking for inspiration, we’re more than a little bit in love with the Chloe ivory pearl tulle overlay!  It can be paired with any of Shikoba’s bridal slips – long or short, depending on your preference.

Wedding Dress Customisation - Things To Remember

Wedding dress customisation is a great way to make you feel completely unique on your big day, but there are important things to remember if you decide to go down this route. Firstly, think budget. Any deviations from the basic design of a dress can incur time and additional costs. When budgeting for a wedding dress, try to remember to add a little extra for alterations or customisations.

If you’re ordering customisations from the off, then your dress will arrive as you want it, but if you change your mind once your dress is home – deciding you want sleeves rather than strapless, for example – you’ll need to organise this quickly to ensure you have plenty of time for fittings and changes. We recommend starting the customisation process no less than 8-10 weeks before your wedding date and booking in your appointments with your seamstress as soon as you buy your dress as they can get booked up during peak bridal season (March – September).

Finally, the best way to end up with your perfect dress is to communicate your wants clearly – whether you’re looking to change the material of a dress or alter the length, you won’t know if it’s possible if you don’t ask! Remember to listen and trust that the professionals helping you to create your dream wedding dress will know what is feasible and will be on hand to help you look and feel your best.
